Pie and Ice Cream in Wisconsin

Yesterday, I forgot what day of the week it was. I honestly couldn’t remember if it was my birth DAY or not! Or maybe I was in denial. But once I realized that it was the 8th, and I was another year wiser, I committed to celebrating the big day.

So, we indulged on awesome grub. On my birthday, I was going to eat and drink whatever I wanted and enjoy it without guilt! We were in Wisconsin, so what else could we eat, but dairy! Lots of it!

First we stopped in a tiny no-name town in Wisconsin, just south of Superior, and had;

  • Home made Rubarb Pie a la mode for breakfast
    The service at this little cafe was lackluster, but the pie was 100% home made and simply excellent. The crust was not flaky, but doughy, which I liked. Although the pie could’ve been warmed up a little, overall, it was the most home made desert I’ve had on the road.

Then, in New Richmond, WI, we ate at The Old Saloon

  • Fried cheese curds, onion rings and fries for appetizers (monochromatic coloring made it a little too “beige,” but the freshly fried bar food is the best!)
  • Wisconsin microbrew beer (excellent! a close second to West Coast microbrew)
  • Home made cheese tortellini (no really, home made, we checked. the cheese inside was SO fresh!)
  • and finally, the richest, most fattening ice cream ever. Two scoops; cotton candy, and cake batter with chocolate frosting. If you’ve never had real, home made ice cream before, you have no idea what your missing. This was home made, and the milk came from cows that were probably just down the road. It was heavenly. The flavors were so realistic too, almost verging on psychedelic. I ate it slowly to make it last, it was that good.

Now that, was a birthday celebration to remember!

  1. Remember [snip] Swensen’s?? Good Times, good times… Glad you guys know how to binge once in a while. Living well isn’t only about eating health food. It’s about enjoying good food too, and that includes desert!!

  2. You forgot to mention my big ol’ cinnamon roll, served up with lots of icing and a glob of whipped butter; or how this birthday “breakfast” was at 11:30 after driving hungry for nearly two hours “just South” of Superior. But for a $7.00 birthday meal, it couldn’t be beat. Glad you liked it.

    And what about the home made barbecue sauce at the Old Saloon, doctored up with Leinenkugel’s? And their homemade honey mustard and blue cheese dips for all the fried fare? That BBQ sauce was awesome, they really should bottle it. And there is something to be said for fried cheese dipped in cheese!

    Finally, I don’t mean to disappoint you but the “home made” ice cream you had really only tasted that way. That cute little parlor served Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream made in Madison, WI. It might as well have been homemade, though! It was rich and creamy, and I know ice cream. My first job was as a Swensen’s soda jerk after all, and I worked my way up to making the ice cream. I can tell you, they use fresh ingredients, not any mix out of a box! But they only sell direct to restaurants and ice cream stores so don’t bother looking for it in the markets. Bummer! You can however order Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream online at icecreamsource.com!

    That swirled scoop of Cotton Candy was delicious, it tasted like the real thing. And I just had to get you the cake batter flavor for your birthday. But as far as feeling iguilty is concerned, the nutritional information on thrir cups and packaging says it all…

    Don’t even ask. This is the best ice cream made in Wisconsin, and it tastes so good because it has gobs of rich Wisconsin cream, tons of real ingredients for boat-loads of luscious flavors. That means it’s not low-fat, low-calorie, or low-anything, and that’s why everyone loves it. You want nutrition, eat carrots.
