You two are having way to much fun!!! I haven't check out your site in awhile and this is good entertainment. I have never been to Wisconsin so thanks for sharing your discoveries. I tell ya, the prices you paid for your groceries here sure are appealing to this frugal gal! hehe
Jim, I saw an article in the Times-Standard last month that you wrote about traveling and internet connection, etc....made me smile!
Ted is doing it here at ADS and getting into a flow. We're getting more organized everyday! School starts for me Aug 28. I graduate from Nursing school in May '08...yahoo!
Carry on living & working the dream!
Smile and be blessed!

I just thought it was hilarious how we bought the most 21st Century megaloconglomerate Starbucks coffee from the Amish! And what a bargain ... only $1.25 per pound. One bag wasn't even past it's "best by" date, and the other had just expired in June. Though like beer, as they told us on the Leinie tour, coffee won't go bad. It will just gradually lose flavor. And after saving about $20 on two bags of good coffee that I'll drink quickly enough, I'm OK with that.

Regarding our attire and tattoos, I think that was the reason the older woman left and a young girl returned to help us. At first I assumed she must've been off playing with goats when she was supposed to be minding the store. But perhaps the elder wanted her to see us freaks and learn a lesson about the continued downfall of mankind in the modern world.

Had this girl been just a little less meek or a bit more talkative, I would've asked her about the origin of all the products on the shelf and how they could afford to sell it so cheaply. Like the 25¢ salad dressings over a year past their expiration. We passed on that, thank you. But she really did seem to avert her eyes while ringing us up.

When she reached for a rope hanging from the ceiling after we paid for our goods, I figured she was ringing a bell to alert the clan of a major sale like a bartender after a good tip. But as Rene turned to leave and was nearly struck in the face, we quickly noticed she was opening the door for us with a pulley system. Such technology!

No matter how you may feel about their way of life, words cannot describe the wholesome goodness you can taste in those huge chocolate chip cookies, that wonderful light wheat maple bread, and the most doughy donuts I have ever tasted. And no, they were not day-old Krispy Kremes!
