Afro Mexican (Spanish: "afromexicano") is a term used to identify Mexican people of African ancestry. African Mexicans, now largely assimilated in the general population, have historically been located in certain communities in Mexico.

Who folks identify as is indeed a complicated business. I had a friend who didn't want to be identified as African American because his ancestry was from the West Indes. I identify as Irish-American though my Irish blood is fairly diluted. Still I identify strongly with the culture, beer, etc.
