Just like riding a bike…Posted by Jim in Making Money, Our Story, Work, tags: dogs, graphic design, income, Jerry, three legged dog, Tripawds.com, WorkWhenever I go MIA around here, it usually means I’ve been wrapped up is some major project – one that probably has something to do with three legged dogs. This time is no different.
It was fun designing all these new graphics, and it felt good doing it for something I am passionate about, without some client breathing down my neck telling me to make the text bold and red. Oh, wait … the type on our new Tripawd Power design is bold and red! Well, not really… it’s Cooper Black actually, and more of a crimson. But there I go digressing, here’s the link if you want to talk about typefaces. I would like to think this represents some of my best work. But that’s not saying much considering I haven’t done any real graphic design work since we sold our business nearly three years ago. But it is a nice feeling knowing that I still got it – if I ever really had it, that is. And it goes to prove that graphic design is like riding a bike, in more ways than one. If you think you may have lost the touch, just jump back into your favorite Adobe product and start pedaling. And if your chain falls off and you just can’t get it to work right, call a professional. Anyone need a logo?

Wrong Turns, Mishaps and Motosat Problems With a SmilePosted by Rene in Boondocking, Full-Timing Tips, Live, tags: Boondocking, California Desert, Full-Timing Tips, lifestyle, MiFi, road trip, RV lifestyle, satellite, Slab City, Tripawds.comWe hit the road yesterday for the first time since early December. And as with all first days on the road, things didn’t go quite as smoothly as we would have liked. We are definitely rusty. First, we missed our exit to the Slabs, and almost ended up in Quartzsite. Drove about 25 miles out of our way. Next, when we were in search of water, we took a wrong turn and drove another 10 miles in the opposite direction. The small road we were on was so flooded from the recent rains, we couldn’t find a dry enough place to turn around.
As I proceeded to clean up the mess, Jim tried to turn on the Motosat dish. Guess what? That pain in the ass dish is acting up again, and won’t go up. Thank Dog we have Internet redundancy with our MiFi setup. If we couldn’t get online to manage Tripawds, we would be on our way to the nearest service shop. Apparently our F2 motor is dead . . . again. All this, during our first day back on the road. In the past, I might have fallen apart at so many mishaps in one day. Because when you’re new on the road, multiple screw ups in one day happen a lot, and they can be upsetting. At least to me they were. Jim’s always been a little better about not letting them get him down. But after almost three years on the road, I’m happy to say that we are both able to handle these things with a smile. A few cocktails also work wonders. Good thing we’re stocked up.

It could be worse.Posted by Jim in Our Story, Work, tags: economy, income, money, self employed, temp jobs, Tripawds.com, WorkIt can always be worse. Brain asked René…
But don’t get me wrong, Wyatt has come a long way and is actually showing signs he might actually show us some respect someday. And it could be a lot worse.
Though if it ever did come to that, I think I’d rather head back to our house and focus a little harder on these endeavors of ours. Talk to me come tax time. Overheard in the LiveWorkDream rig recently:
Or something like that. Nevertheless, I concur.

Who’s Training Who?Posted by Rene in Our Story, Rants & Raves, tags: Colorado, RV lifestyle, three legged dog, Tripawds.com
Well, he can’t. And you shouldn’t expect him to either. Because every pup is his own dog, and has new, different, and important lessons to each you. And so, we are back at our place in Colorado, trying to get into some kind of routine and regular training schedule with our new Tripawd hero, Wyatt Ray. Wyatt is definitely teaching us different lessons than Jerry did. Mostly about patience, and dedication to the positive role that structure plays in life. Considering the rough start he had in life, he’s doing pretty well. We know Jerry’s watching out for him (and whispering in his gigantic ears, telling him to stop chewing up our house). Here’s a quick video Jim made for our Tripawds site, that shows us in our backyard and along the roads where we live, with Wyatt, Tripawd extraordinaire.

Free WordPress Blogs for RVers and Three Legged Dogs!Posted by Jim in Full-Timing Tips, Live, WordPress, Work, tags: blog, RVblogz.com, Tripawds.com, WordPressYou haven’t heard from me around here in a while because I have been a bit preoccupied lately. In addition to our property search, home purchase, cross country move, and welcoming Wyatt into our pack, I have been buried with PHP, MySQL queries, FTP sessions and function calls. Say what, you say? It’s been quite a learning experience really, which I care to share in depth someday. But for now, I’ll just tell you what it means…
Yes, we announced RVblogz a long time ago, but the recent migration to WPMU has enabled us expedite blog creation and offer much more robust features for RVbloggerz. In fact you can get your own free travel blog in seconds, now that we have automated the blog creation process. Well, WordPress MU has, but we made it work! If you want to check out a fine example of how full-timers are using RVblogz, check out the Purcells On Wheels traveling family blog! Or, how many of you have heard of the Killbarney project?
There’s much much more we will let you read about RVblogz. But why not sign up for your travel blog now and join the community? Or join Tripawds so you can chat online with us in the new and improved Live Tripawds Chat. So much to tell, such little time … just wanted any readers we have left to know why I’ve been such a stranger lately. And now that we’re headed back to ranch so I can work the Vickers hay harvest, I may become even stranger yet. If that is at all possible.

And an Amputee Dog Makes Three . . .Posted by Rene in Our Story, tags: three legged dog, Tripawds.com
We are so happy to announce the arrival of Jerry’s Leg-a-cy, and our new Tripawds spokesdog, Wyatt Ray Dawg. Jerry, we know you would have a great time with this boy. He’s super hard headed and really smart like you! And while no other dog can ever replace your beautiful self, we know how much you want us to always love life to the fullest. Wyatt is showing us once again what that means. Here’s how Wyatt came into our lives . . .

Our new Box and the ChipIn! WidgetPosted by Jim in Best of, Making Money, Rants & Raves, WordPress, Work, tags: expenses, reader poll, Tripawds.com, upgrade, WordPressAnyone who ever wants – or needs – to raise funds for anything online should definitely check out this ChipIn! widget. We’re collecting contributions over at tripawds.com to help fund our first managed server hosting account. The community on Jerry’s site has grown beyond our current shared hosting plan’s capabilities. And it showed as poor performance in the Tripawd Discussion Forums and Chat Room. So, Bob is provisioning our new dedicated server. Soon I get to learn cPanel and endure the WordPress migration thing for the tripawd blog and move the Simple:Press forums. That means this site will follow. Expect downtime over the upcoming week. Thank you for your continued support.

Why We Love Cats and Dogs: Thank You Ellen, Thank You PBSPosted by Rene in Our Story, Work, tags: Nature, PBS, RV road trip, sabbatical, three legged dog, Tripawds.com, Why We Love Cats and Dogs
We have spent the last day answering the many heartfelt comments people are leaving on our posts about Jerry’s last days. We can’t thank PBS and WNET enough for sharing Jerry’s story. If you missed it, no worries. You can still watch the full episode online. We must give a special shout-out to producer Ellen Goosenberg Kent and her crew. Since they first followed us around Santa Fe last March, we’ve wondered what would come of the hours of footage they shot. Well, Ellen did a simply amazing job telling Jerry’s story! We have now seen it about a dozen times and still cry every time. We are just astounded to think that our story has touched so many people, in such profound ways. If the response here and on the Nature website is any indication, Ellen is sure to be nominated for another Emmy! Thank you Ellen. Thank you Nature. Thank you PBS.

In the Spotlight at the 2009 TCA Press TourPosted by Rene in Uncategorized, tags: Agredano, Jerry, Nature, Nelson, PBS, RV road trip, sabbatical, three legged dog, Tripawds.com, Why We Love Cats and Dogs
For a sneak preview of some of our scenes in the show, check out Jerry’s Tripawds website.
We were clueless about the significance of the TCA event. But then Ellen told us that not every show gets invited to the showcase, and this was the only Nature episode being presented. Later, as we were whisked into the Universal Studios Hilton ballroom with a large stage, gigantic video monitors and about 100 reporters, we got the picture.
The event was over in the blink of an eye, but the results have been encouraging. We’ve so far been interviewed by the TV Guide Channel, a Tribune News Media reporter, and this Tuesday, a San Luis Obispo area talk radio host, Dave Congelton, is interviewing us. Keep an eye out for your local newspapers to review the show. As we watch this dream unfold, we can’t help but feel blessed for all of the incredible gifts that Jerry bestowed on us. He was such an inspiration, and despite the pain of losing him far too soon, we are comforted in knowing that his story will go on to inspire others all over the world through this show, and of course, his website. Many thanks to producer Ellen and our friend Luke for believing in his story. Remember, Why We Love Cats and Dogs premieres Sunday, February 15 on PBS (check local listings).

Rolling the Willie WayPosted by Rene in Our Story, tags: Boondocking, California Desert, fulltiming, Jawbone Canyon, Mojave, RV, RV lifestyle, RV road trip, sabbatical, three legged dog, travel, Tripawds.com, Willie Nelson
Ok, I know it’s cliche, but it had to be done. Just over a month after arriving in L.A., we said tearful goodbyes to the family yesterday, then headed up to Paso Robles to meet Moose’s family, our heroes who showed us that dogs can live great lives on three legs. We wouldn’t be the wandering hoboes we are if it wasn’t for this incredible pack. We had a great visit. More on that later. Meanwhile, we’re boondocking on classic desert BLM land near Red Rocks State Park. This place is filled with OHVers on weekends, but weekdays are relatively quiet. Friday, we’ll head to Palm Springs to catch Willie Nelson live! We are huge Willie fans, and have been trying to get to one of his shows for years, but never made it. Finally, our universes will collide this Friday night. I can’t tell you how excited we are about it. Till then, we’re gonna get re-acclimated with life on the road. We’ll soak up the sun, go on hikes, watch sunsets, and write our guts out here in the desert. I just hope we can view the Inauguration tomorrow morning on the web without getting FAP’d by our satellite provider. |
