A Dark and Lonely Black Friday

Well, it’s time for that whole Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend business that’s been keeping the local newspapers fat for the past few weeks. And while on a run with Wyatt around 8:00 a.m. this morning, I noticed one good consumer couple already unloading various stuffed shopping bags from their car. They must have heard, the economy has recovered! But don’t they know there are deals to be had online…

I’m not exactly sure what such a negative connotation as Black Friday has to do with a great day for shopping. But it was certainly dark when Rene climbed on her bike and headed off in the freezing cold this morning to begin her overtime hours at Amazon. And while Wyatt is a handful, the rig is certainly lonely without her.

As long as she gets all those hours the Great Satan has promised her, our stay in Fernley might be worthwhile, and just maybe we’ll be able to afford running the furnace every morning for the next month. So don’t forget … if you plan on shopping online this year, please start here.

  1. According to wikipedia Black Friday is “More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead to refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers go from being in the red (i.e., posting a loss on the books) to being in the black (i.e., turning a profit).

Here in Coffeyville, KS, both day and night shifts worked 7 hours instead of 11 hour shift. Starting today (Friday) we go back to 10 hour shifts – at least for now – as with everything at amazon.com things can/will change again soon….but that is a big part of their success….they can and do change things very quickly. Yes, as you can tell I am a fan of amazon.com and yes I am a workamper working for them through Express Pro.

  2. NBC had an article on Fernley. Tom Borkaw on his highway 50 series stopped there. He interviewed a firemen who had just bought his first house there. He paid $130,000 for a foreclosed house that had sold for $290,000 a couple of years ago.

    • I believe it! Though I wonder if it was ever really worth $290… The neighborhood we walk often feels like a ghost town with foreclosures on every block. And, a local realty sign touts houses to be had for $95,000. Though again – no offense to anyone who might actually like it here – but I wonder if you’d get your money’s worth with those either.

      Thanks for the comment!
